About The Winnipeg Humane Society

The Winnipeg Humane Society (WHS) is a community service organization committed to protecting animals from suffering and promoting their welfare and dignity. The WHS, the oldest animal shelter and welfare organization in Manitoba, works closely with generous partners and over 700 hard-working volunteers who are united in the belief that every animal deserves love.

We believe that every animal deserves a forever home. This is achieved through programs like our Yelp Line and behaviour classes.

The Yelp Line provides invaluable over-the-phone advice to Winnipeg pet owners who are having issues with their pets. In 2014, the most frequent phone calls the Yelp Line yielded were in regards to cat litter box issues and dog and cat relationship problems. Whether a pet owner has a dog that digs or barks too much, or a cat that is scratching your furniture, The WHS’ Yelp Line has the answers. Visit the Yelp Line by clicking here.

Our job is not finished after finding forever homes for the animals in our shelter. In addition to adoption services, The WHS offers a variety of classes for pets and their owners. Pet First Aid courses gives owners the necessary information needed in order to respond to life-threatening emergencies involving their dog or cat. Dogs & Storks courses offers positive, practical and fun solutions for new parents and expecting families in the first national pre-baby program where dogs are the focus. Dog obedience classes are also offered year-round and focus on positive-reinforcement based training methods.

The WHS’ catalogue of courses expands this fall with the opening of the Joyce Gauthier Behaviour and Training Centre. The new centre means more courses will be offered to pet owners, which results in more well-behaved pets in homes across Winnipeg. The centre also gives dogs under our care more opportunities to build confidence in themselves and better opportunities to be adopted.

Adopting is much better than shopping for an animal. The WHS’ adoption fees include your animal’s first vaccine(s), spay/neutering, ear tattoo, City of Winnipeg Dog License (dogs only), and more. The WHS assesses the behaviour of all cats and dogs that come through our doors in an effort to make sure you are adopting an animal that is best suited for you. A happy pet and owner means more lifetime memories! Interested in adopting? Call 204-982-2035 today.
